I hope you’ve had a great 2024! I want to say a big thank you to everyone who has attended my courses, heard me speak at conferences, or referred patients my way this year. Your support means so much and allows me to keep doing what I love—helping patients with challenging denture cases. For the past 18 years, I’ve been providing specialist prosthodontic care from Garstang, working with dentists, specialists, dental technicians, and CDTs to find practical solutions for even the toughest cases.
Read MoreI’m thrilled to share that I’m currently writing a textbook on removable partial dentures (RPDs) with Dr. John Besford, my mentor, and an incredible prosthodontist who has profoundly shaped my journey in dentistry. John’s knowledge, passion, and skill have inspired me to view removable prosthodontics not just as a technical endeavor but as an art that, when mastered, can have a transformative impact on patients' lives. Working with him on this book has been a privilege and a wonderful learning experience.

Read MoreLast week, I ran another Complete Denture course using Kate, an American patient, as the demo case. We had delegates from the Netherlands, India, Romania, and Ireland. It was a fantastic two-day event packed with hands-on and hands-off demonstrations. Kate, who adapted brilliantly to her new dentures, shared her honest experiences with the group, giving real-life insights into wearing complete dentures. The course provided practical tips and techniques that can be immediately applied in clinical practice—great energy and engagement all around!
Read MoreThis edition features the case of Edgar, who sought help for a poorly fitting, acrylic-based partial denture that rocked, affected his speech, and caused discomfort. After considering various treatment options, including dental implants, Edgar opted for a metal-based removable partial denture, designed by myself with input from my technician, Rowan Garstang.
Despite significant improvements in comfort and aesthetics, Edgar expressed dissatisfaction with the denture's slight movement during certain jaw movements. This case underscores the importance of setting clear expectations, communicating limitations early, and ensuring both the patient and I are aligned on what can realistically be achieved. I must also be careful not to exaggerate the benefits of the treatment, to avoid creating false expectations.
Read MoreThis month's case features the complete denture provision for Jan, a healthy 66-year-old who desired a smile mimicking her daughter's. Back in the 1990s, a growth was removed from her anterior mandible, and the area was skin grafted. Interestingly, she was still using the same complete dentures made over 30 years ago, which was now very worn. The tooth positions were incorrect too, with the upper teeth placed to far back over the ridge giving poor lip support. The lower denture included an extension at the front to fit over the altered anatomy.
