Finlay Sutton's Study Club 8 Keith's Class I Div I metal based Mx Scandinavian style partial denture

Keith’s combat denture case study (Link to case study slides)

Keith’s case was one of the most rewarding challenges I’ve faced this year. He arrived with ill-fitting acrylic partial dentures that constantly broke and lacked stability, retention, and aesthetics. After losing his upper front teeth in a road traffic accident in his early 20s, the unopposed teeth had erupted, complicating his case.

Using Scandinavian RPD techniques, I designed a durable cobalt-chromium-based upper partial denture. The denture incorporated a virtually invisible Duracetal shell clasp (Myerson) for improved aesthetics and comfort. To re-establish the occlusion, I used the Dahl concept, which allowed the occlusion to settle naturally and effectively intruded the lower left canine without the need for excessive adjustments.

Key elements of the treatment included:

  • Scandinavian-inspired design: Maximising stability, protecting remaining teeth, and allowing future modifications.
  • Onlay preparations: Composite onlays for better denture support.
  • Precise impressions: A custom tray and alginate impressions for a perfect fit.
  • Patient communication: Aesthetic rehearsals and thorough discussions to ensure Keith’s expectations were met.

The result? A denture that restored Keith’s function, aesthetics, and confidence. This case highlights how modern removable prosthodontic techniques can make a transformative difference for patients.
