Dear Finlay,

If someone had told me that I would every willingly face the prospect of almost a dozen dental appointments, I would not have believed them! Past unhappy experiences in the dental chair and fear of pain had coupled to produce that familiar ‘sick-with-dread’ feeling whenever I had previously faced just one dental appointment.

However, by the time I met Dr Finlay Sutton, I was faced with deteriorating and complex dental problems which were affecting what I could chew so that my diet was limited, and I was also very self-conscious of my discoloured and heavily filled front teeth, but I faced the inevitably lengthy treatment programme with some trepidation.

Thanks to Finlay’s gentle and continual reassurance and encouragement throughout, I have been able actually to relax as treatment progressed, confident in the skills of Finlay, Claire and the team.

Now my self confidence has been restored and I can smile without embarrassment; my diet has improved; and most astonishing of all, as the treatment comes to an end, the dread has gone as I look forward to any appointments that may be necessary in the future!

Before I came to see Finlay I couldn’t eat with my bottom denture. It kept moving around my mouth so I never wore it.

I decided to go for the option of implants in the bottom jaw in order to give me fixed teeth back.

It was daunting to think about but was not as bad as I expected it to be. Finlay, Claire, Rowan and Andrew put me at ease and I was made to feel comfortable and looked after at all times. Claire even called me at home following the procedure and made sure I was okay.

Everyone put themselves out and I felt I could ring up whenever I had any questions, and they were always accessible if I had any concerns.

The week after having my denture fitted to the implants I flew to New York and was eating steak and pork chops! Thank you Finlay.

Dear Finlay,

At the start of the treatment I was initially apprehensive, having been with my own trusted dentist for twenty years, but had to accept that the damage to my tooth was so extensive that it could only be rectified with an implant. Any apprehension was soon overcome by the calm, tranquil atmosphere in your waiting room as surgery. Both were airy and bright, and free from clutter, and from the outset I was confident that you and your team were all focussed on the work ahead.

The staff on the reception desk were helpful and cheerful, and this also was reassuring - helping to set the tome for each visit. My husband particularly appreciated the supply of coffee while he was waiting for me!

The procedure was spread over six months and seven appointments. From the outset I was impressed and reassured by the air of professionalism and the friendly calm atmosphere, together with the fact that I was included and involved in all the decisions pertaining to my treatment – from the precise colour of the crown to the appropriateness of the aesthetics used at various stages to accommodate other unconnected health problems. Throughout you were thorough, cautious, conscientious and well prepared.

Your clear explanations prepared me for any possible discomforts between appointments. It was more than reassuring to know that you or Claire would be only a phone call away at any time, should I have needed you.

The rapport between you and your team members – anaesthetist, technician and dental nurse – was a pleasure to watch.

The final result is a tribute to your workmanship and attention to detail, exemplified by the care you took over the finishing of the crown, and its fitting to the natural gumline, so that it is indistinguishable from the neighbouring teeth. I am delighted with it.

In conclusion, from my initial visit to my final appointment, it was a truly excellent patient experience.

Dear Finlay and Team,

I came to see you at your practice for a new set of upper dentures and partial lower denture and I must admit after previous total disappointments I was extremely nervous and apprehensive and felt I would never be able to achieve the appearance and fit I wanted from a set of dentures.

Everyone at your practice made me feel so much at ease and very soon I felt totally comfortable and confident. It was a pleasure to attend every appointment knowing that I had total trust in you and your technician, Rowan. You were all so kind and it wasn’t like going to the dentist as I felt I was amongst friends and Claire was always very supportive and always gave a friendly welcome.

I finally walked out with a set of dentures that I thought I would never be able to achieve feeling on top of the world. Dear Finlay,

After I had had two years of treatment for breast cancer I started to think how good I would feel if my teeth were changed, this was probably the time when I could have talked myself out of it. So on visiting my dentist for a 6 monthly check-up I did not even know if I would pluck up the courage. I know this sounds silly but when you are embarrassed about your teeth it is quite hard to talk about it. Well I did mention it to my dentist and I thought (naively) that he would be able to offer me some treatment but when he said my mouth was complicated I thought now I am done for. I was so desperate I even said I would have false teeth, he said he could refer me to a specialist dentist in Garstang if I wanted so I jumped at the chance.

After a short time I got an appointment with Finlay and duly arrived at the surgery I can honestly say that from that moment on I felt in good hands and I knew I had made the right decision. It is a well known fact that the first steps are always the hardest and although I have had many hours of treatment, it was the deciding to do something about my teeth that was the hardest part. I could not be more pleased with the results, my mouth has had a whole new makeover and now I can smile without embarrassment.

Finlay and Claire have always been professional, friendly, helpful and kind.

Dear Finlay,

Thank you for making me such excellent dentures. I am very happy with both their appearance and fit, it is a pleasure to eat in such comfort and smile with such confidence. I decided to seek Finlay’s advice as the veneers on my four front teeth were in need of replacing. My gums have receded and the veneers have become stained around the edges. I am due to get married in July 2009 and wanted a perfect smile for my wedding day.

A lot of time went into discussing which treatment options would be best. In the end it was decided to initially carry out a course of teeth whitening and then to replace veneers on my six front teeth.

The whitening treatment helped to remove the staining from my own teeth, thus improving all of my teeth bit just the front six.

The veneers are an excellent shade match to my own teeth and the shape of them was made to look like natural teeth. Many of my family and friends have commented upon how good they look.

I have had no problems with my veneers and the initial sensitivity settled down as you advised it would.

Throughout the treatment Finlay and Claire were very attentive and kept me informed about the process. I would thoroughly recommend them to anyone.

I can’t wait to show off my smile at my forthcoming wedding.

Dental surgery is not something to look forward to, particularly so in my case as the required work was considerable. From the outset the process was explained, timetables set and my mind put at ease.

The care, attention to detail and consideration given by Finlay, Claire and Rowan is of the highest order and is easily recommended.

Pain experienced would be better described as discomfort and amazingly, really amazingly, I cannot remember anything about the implant procedure!

All in all my apprehension was ill founded. The process is not unduly disruptive to normal daily life and the results are extremely well worthwhile.

I suppose I first began to think I was in serious trouble with my teeth when a practice nurse said to me ‘you know you are gaining on us, we cannot keep up with the deteriorating situation’ and I feared an outcome I dreaded most, that of having to wear dentures.

My dentist referred me to Dr Finlay Sutton and his appraisal not only confirmed the deteriorating situation but exposed severe caries, periodontal disease and gum recession. My mouth was not a pretty sight and I felt quite embarrassed about it. For some time I had been unable to chew vegetables and raw fruit and my diet was quite restricted. Whenever I had dental treatment my bite was a source of wonder to all who had treated me as only a couple of my teeth actually met.

Dr Sutton and his team embarked on a radical programme of extractions and restorative dentistry which involved crowns and bridges in the upper jaw and crowns and a bridge based on implants in the lower. Over the period of time this took I was fitted with temporary bridges and dentures as the need arose and always left the surgery with teeth and able to eat in comfort.

The treatment is now concluded and I am more than amazed at what has been done and the transformation that has taken place. For the first time in my adult life I have a beautiful set of teeth, and for the first time in years I am able to bite in comfort and eat and chew any food and yet it all looks and feels as though it had always been like this.

I cannot speak too highly of Dr Sutton. The expertise he has shown has been of the highest order and his care and concern for me as a patient filled me with great confidence. There were times when I could not help but wonder at his attention to detail and at his determination to achieve the very best possible result for me. Naturally in a practice of this excellence one would expect the other members of the team to be expert in their own fields too and I must say that Claire, Dr Sutton’s nurse and secretary, and Rowan who was responsible for the technical work behind the dental reconstruction, showed me the same care and concern.

Lastly to Dr Sutton, Claire and Rowan, I wish to extend my sincere gratitude. The quality of the care they have shown me in what was a most difficult and serious dental problem has been magnificent, the outcome beyond my wildest dreams, and I am more than happy to have met them and to have been one of their patients.

Dear Finlay and Claire, We started our journey back in February and as you were aware, I was very apprehensive and a very nervous patient.

As my treatment progressed over the 6 months that feeling soon passed and that is all down to you two. Your courteous and very professional approach to me gave me the confidence I needed to relax in the chair. But more importantly the final result of my treatment is all I could have asked for.
